Track and in Aztec field leads with striking times

Men and women’s Track and Field traveled to San Diego State University for the 39th Annual Aztec Invitational on March 24 and 25. The Cougars as a whole had a relatively solid outing alongside some standout performances.

 

On the women’s side, Senior Cristen Lane won the 1500m with a personal record of 4:37.38, a 2.68 second increase from her previous time. Joining Lane with a personal record of her own, Natalie Rodriguez ran a 2:15.15 in the 800m.

 

Senior Jasmine Oliver finished ninth in the 200m with a personal best 25.90 while freshman Devony Dettman, achieved a personal record of 14.96 in the 100H. “I think putting constant work and intensity in each workout has been the difference. It transfers over to the race” said Dettman.

 

The 4x100m squad consisting of Oliver, Dettman, Jolene Widmer and Lauren Wyckoff collectively finished second in the event.

 

Freshmen Danielle Pettit and Jasmine Shambo qualified for the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship. Shambo qualified in the triple jump and Pettit in the pole vault.

 

For the men, senior Justin Washington finished first in the 800m, clocking in at 1:54.51. Washington said, “ I want to get the school record [before the year is over] in the 800 (1:49.47).” With a personal record of 1:51.39.

 

Freshman Shea Vavra finished with a 3:58.19 in the 1500m and placed second.

 

Sophomore Joseph Gonzalez came out on top of the 3000m with a time of 8:39.29.

 

Senior Josh Maffei continued to top his previous performances with yet another break of his own school record, throwing 13.92m for a 12th place finish. Fellow thrower Tim Stalboerger, a freshman, recorded a personal best of 47.98m in the javelin throw.

 

Freshmen Nick Samuels and Antonio Riggins placed fourth and fifth in the triple jump, Samuels jumped a 12.97m and Riggins a 12.94m.

 

The California Collegiate Invitational hosted by UC San Diego will be next up for the Cougars on April 1.
