Recreating a Resurrection Day scene

Bunnies, chocolate, eggs and jelly beans. These are things that come to mind when people hear the word Easter. However, when I think about Easter or Resurrection Day, the words that come to my mind are saviour, sacrifice, freedom and resurrection. For me Easter is a day to remember the great sacrifice that my Lord made by dying on the cross. He sacrificed his life so that I could be set free. My family and I prefer to call this holiday Resurrection day because it is a great reminder of the Lord’s unbreakable promises. That’s why every Easter I make the salt dough Resurrection Day tomb with my little siblings. This DIY symbolizes the true meaning of Easter and helps little ones better understand the importance of this day.

All you need is:

2 cups flour

1/2 cup salt

3/4 cup warm water

Non stick spray

A small oven safe glass bowl

Start out by preheating your oven to 170 degrees. Then mix the flour, salt and warm water together until smooth. Flatten out your dough using a rolling pin about ¼ inch thick.

Then grab a bowl, turn it upside down and spray it with nonstick cooking spray. Drape your salt dough mixture over the bowl and shape it (this will be your tomb), remove any excess.

Using a toothpick carve out a small opening at the bottom, and remove it from the bowl. Mold Shape it into a similar shape as the carving made on your tomb, this will be your door. Use the leftover dough from the tomb to create a sign. To do this just flatten the dough using the palm of your hands and shape it into a rectangular shape.

Put the tomb, door and sign on a cookie sheet and bake for about four hours. Once it is finished baking allow the tomb to dry before removing it from the bowl.

Grab your sign and write “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said,” Matthew 28:6. Place your tomb on a sturdy base put the door by the opening and place your sign in the front. Now you have created your very own resurrection scene.

I personally love doing this DIY with my siblings, because it serves as a visual aid which helps them grasp the true meaning of this beautiful day.  It’s also a great reminder for me that the Lord is always true to his word because He Has Risen as He said.
