The Cougar Chronicle Staff

This month, the staff of The Cougar Chronicle student newspaper launched a video news channel on YouTube.com, where it plans to feature video news, feature, opinion and sports reports.

Chronicle faculty adviser Pam Kragen said the move toward video is part of Cal State San Marcos’ long-range plan to create a Convergent Media minor, which will integrate the disciplines of communications, writing, film and broadcast. The university hopes to launch the minor in Spring 2014, and The Cougar Chronicle staff is on the cutting edge of this multidiscipline approach to journalism.

“These days, journalists need to be trained in multiple platforms,” Kragen said. “It’s not enough anymore to just be a good writer or a good photographer. Any student training for a media career today needs to be proficient at writing, editing, photography and videography and be adept at all the social media programs that are out there.”

Since launching its new state-of-the-art website in Fall 2012, The Cougar Chronicle has launched a Facebook page, Twitter account and now a new video channel on youtube, CSUSMnewspaper, or CSUSM Cougar Chronicle Channel.

Students who are interested in creating films, news reports, video blogs or other content for the channel are encouraged to attend the newspaper’s weekly news meetings at noon Tuesdays in Craven Hall 3500. For details, email [email protected].
