Celebrating womanhood

Herstory Month is one of my favorite months because it gives us a moment to stop and celebrate women of all races, ethnicities, religions, shapes, ages and backgrounds.

Herstory often focuses on famous women in history who have achieved success and fought against societal oppression. While I fully support celebrating famous female role models, I also believe in celebrating the women of everyday life. They are the women who influence us personally, who make a difference in our lives and make us better individuals.

There are many women in my life who have shaped me into the person I am today. My mother is the epitome of strength and love. Through sacrifices and unconditional love, she has taught me the values of kindness, loyalty, hard work and never giving up. She believes in me when I don’t believe in myself. She is my best friend and my mentor.

One of my dearest friends, Tamara, is one of the kindest and most supportive women I know. She’s always ready to offer a word of encouragement and a smile to brighten my day. Her wisdom has kept hope alive in me when I have wanted to give up on things. She values the beauty in life and others.

Another close friend of mine, Sierra, is one of the most understanding and brave women in my life. She loves fiercely and accepts me for who I really am, faults and shortcomings included. She’s not afraid to tell me the truth and push me out of my comfort zone. She makes me laugh until I cry.

Celebrating the women in our lives who will never be famous but who embody strength, love, compassion and hard work is what Herstory Month is all about.

So here’s to the women who are stay at home moms and wives. Here’s to the women who lift and support others and choose love. Here’s to the women who work their fingers to the bone in order to support their families. Here’s to the women of every body shape, skin tone, ethnicity, eye color and hair type. Here’s to all women everywhere. You are heroes and wonderful role models. You are the picture of strength. You are inspirations. You are beautiful.
