Welcome! Are you interested in becoming a part of Cal State San Marcos’ independent student newspaper, The Cougar Chronicle?

By joining The Cougar Chronicle, you can gain valuable work experience, stay connected to your campus community and tell stories that matter.

During the Spring 2023 semester, The Cougar Chronicle continues to produce campus-oriented web content as CSUSM returns to in-person activity.

We accept new staff members for the following positions on a rolling basis:

Staff Writers
Photographers
Video Reporters
Graphic Artists

Regular staff members (the above positions) have no hourly commitment. If interested in joining us in this capacity, please email the Editor-in-Chief, Danya Rodriguez, at [email protected].

We are also accepting applications for various editor and intern positions for Spring 2023 (listed below).

SPRING 2023 OPEN POSITIONS

Staff Writer and/or Video Reporter

  • Writes articles and/or creates video stories.
  • Any major welcome to apply!
  • Hours flexible.
  • Recommended to attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Ability to enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A.


Video Editor

  • Makes quality video content for our YouTube channel.
  • Art & technology major or video/film production minor preferred but not required.
  • Average commitment of 6-7 hours per week.
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A.
  • Receive financial compensation through the University for you work.

Web Manager

  • Manages and updates the Cougar Chronicle website.
  • Knowledge in managing WordPress/SNO Sites is preferred but not required.
  • Average commitment of 6-7 hours per week.
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A.
  • Receive financial compensation through the University for you work.
  • Note: The web manager position is currently filled for Spring 2023 but we have an opening for Fall 2023.

Assistant Editor (Intern or Non-Intern)

  • Is assigned to one of the following sections: news, arts & entertainment, features, opinion and sports, and assists their respective section editor by writing for and editing that section.
  • Any major welcome to apply!
  • Average commitment of 4-5 hours per week.
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Ability to enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A.

Editor

  • Editors oversee the story creation process and edit articles written by staff.
  • Any major welcome to apply! Previous editing/journalism experience is preferred.
  • Average commitment of 6-7 hours per week.
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A.
  • Receive financial compensation through the University for you work.
  • Note: All Editor positions are currently filled for Spring 2023 but we have openings for Fall 2023.
