Welcome! Are you interested in becoming a part of CSUSM’s independent student newspaper, The Cougar Chronicle?

By joining The Cougar Chronicle, you can gain valuable work experience, stay connected to your campus community and tell stories that matter.

While CSUSM’s physical campus will be closed for the 2020-2021 academic year, The Cougar Chronicle will still be in operation producing online content. The Cougar Chronicle will also be producing content in the fall 2021 semester, either online-only or print and online.

We accept new staff members for the following positions on a rolling basis:

Staff Writers
Photographers
Video Reporters
Graphic Artists

Regular staff members (the above positions) have no minimum hourly commitment and are unpaid. If interested in joining us in this capacity, just email the Editor-in-Chief, Tania Ortiz, at [email protected].

We are also accepting applications for various editor and intern positions for fall 2021 (listed below). If interested in the below positions, apply by Aug.1 for priority consideration.

FALL 2021 OPEN POSITIONS

Staff Writer and/or Video Reporter Internship

  • Writes articles and/or creates video stories. (The work is the same as a non-intern staff writer/video reporter, but the intern makes more of a time commitment.)
  • Any major welcome to apply.
  • 120 hours over the course of the semester (average 7-8 hours per week)
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A which meets Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Staff writer and/or video reporter interns do not receive any payment.

Advertising Sales Representative Internship

  • Sells advertising for our website.
  • Marketing major preferred but not required.
  • 120 hours over the course of the semester (average 7-8 hours per week)
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A which meets Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Payment is a commission rate on ads sold of 10% for returning clients and 20% for new clients and the intern will also receive a small stipend (amount TBD).

Video Editor Internship

  • Makes quality video content for our YouTube channel.
  • Art & technology major or video/film production minor preferred but not required.
  • 120 hours over the course of the semester (average 7-8 hours per week)
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A which meets Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The intern will receive a small stipend (amount TBD).

Graphic Design/Cartoonist Internship

  • Produces quality graphic design artwork for our website and/or print edition.
  • Art & design major preferred but not required.
  • 120 hours over the course of the semester (average 7-8 hours per week)
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A which meets Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The intern will receive a small stipend (amount TBD).

Web and Social Media Manager Internship

  • Manages and updates The Cougar Chronicle website and social media pages.
  • Any major welcome to apply.
  • Knowledge in managing WordPress/SNO is preferred but not required.
  • 120 hours over the course of the semester (average 7-8 hours per week)
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A which meets Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • The intern will receive a small stipend (amount TBD).

Assistant Editor (intern or non-intern)

  • Is assigned to one of the following sections: news, arts & entertainment, features, opinion and sports, and assists their respective section editor by writing for and editing that section.
  • Any major welcome to apply.
  • Average commitment of 4 hours per week for non-intern assistant editors and 7-8 hours per week for intern assistant editors.
  • Must attend weekly staff meetings which are Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Must enroll in 1-unit class CJRN 401A which meets Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Assistant editors do not receive any payment.
