Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Review
Walt Disney Studios is known for its sense of wonder in the movie industry and it is no surprise that Maleficent: Mistress of Evil accomplishes this as well. Through its costume design, score, cinematography and visual effects, Disney has captured the essence of a fairytale with a twist.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the story of Sleeping Beauty but from the perspective of Maleficent (Angelina Jolie). In the film, Aurora (Elle Fanning) and Prince Philip (Harris Dickinson) get engaged, so Maleficent has to meet the in-laws. Throughout the film, Maleficent has to battle both her own fears and other characters. Along the way, she meets people from whom she can learn about her past.
Angelina Jolie has starred in numerous films, but one of her most known characters is Maleficent. Through her performance as Maleficent, she brings out the evil and the gracefulness that is portrayed in the character. Angelina Jolie’s role as Maleficent is astonishing; her use of emotion to portray this character who is seen as a devil is extraordinary.
Although the story of Sleeping Beauty may be a snore, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil brings out the imagination that you once had when you were a child. Throughout the two hour movie, every second is filled with scenes that are only known in your dreams. Sitting there in the theater, your eyes are brought to light with magical scenes filled with fairies and mystical creatures unknown to the human world.
The movie is brought to life not only with the visual effects, but with the costume design. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick displayed the characters’ personalities through their costumes. Mirojnick’s ability to change the outlook of the costume yet keep the feeling of the character is what helps make this film so successful.
The movie was brought together with a glorious and whimsical score filled with joyous delight. The composer, Geoff Zanelli, who has composed original music for other Walt Disney Studio projects, uses his artistic skills to great success.
Overall, the cinematography is what makes this film come alive. Scenes are enhanced with the exotic film style. Your eyes deceive you when witnessing the breathtaking scenes. Director Joachim Rønning brings his films to another level, which you can only experience if you watch the movie.
Although there may be mixed emotions about this film, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is genuinely astonishing and the full experience can only be witnessed in theaters. All in all, you should go watch the movie yourself and be amazed at the art and magic of film.
