Finding a good TV show on Netflix is one of the most challenging things, sadly.
But fortunately, the first season of IFC’s Comedy Bang! Bang! is currently available for streaming in all of its ten episode glory. Scott Aukerman hosts his talk show parody/live action sketch comedy show with the musical talents of his band leader, Reggie Watts. Aukerman and Watts are absolutely brilliant, especially once you realize that the show has its own unique and hilarious language of nonsense and uncanny references. One of the best things about this show is that it takes the use of dry humor, normally an acquired taste and makes it accessible to a vast audience. All the elements of a late night talk show are here, aside from the obnoxious laugh track and shameless plugs.
Thankfully all of the celebrities featured are very aware of the nature of this show and will often play fictionalized and/or exaggerated versions of them. Celebrities that have been featured include: Zach Galifianakis, Seth Rogen, John Hamm, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Rainn Wilson and Anna Kendrick. The sketches showcased in this program range from faux movie trailers and Law and Order spoofs to bogus game shows like “What Are They Eating?” and opinion oriented skits like “Maybe It’s Just Me, But For Me.”
Fans of the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and MAD TV will be addicted to this show. And if you don’t know what those are, be sure to check those out as well. The show is currently in its second season, with brand new episodes airing on IFC at 10 p.m. eastern with occasional free streaming on IFC.com the following week. You can catch the newest episodes here, all the way until the end of the semester if the first season isn’t enough “Bang! Bang!” for you.
I give Comedy Bang! Bang! 4.5/5 bags of popcorn.
