Available through DVD and Netflix, this film is one of profound sadness.
Soraya’s story contains themes of women’s oppression and unequal status in 1986 third-world Iran. A woman who has always done what she is supposed to, Soraya struggles for the sake of her and that of her daughter. Her husband abandoned them through divorce to destitute hunger for a rich, 14 year old bride. Through lies and a community closing in around her, she is faced with stoning for an adultery she didn’t commit.
It is based on a true story and for this fact people should acquaint themselves with its message and injustices similar to this.
I give this film 5 out of 5 stars, though you should certainly watch it in a mood that is receptive to a serious and somber movie.
