Language Learning Center ready to help
Learning Center Services
September 30, 2015
The Language Learning Center has been a resource available to students at CSUSM for the past 15 years.
The LLC offers tutoring for Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese and ASL. They also advise students for the foreign language graduation requirement (LOTER) exams as well as Spanish proficiency exams.
Initially, the LLC offered support to students learning foreign languages by providing cassettes made by professors. Today, that help is administered through an interactive help center that provides support to students learning foreign languages.
“Students who are blessed with speaking another language at home, or even just hearing one… still fall under the spectrum of students we can help,” said Hilary Taylor, the director of LLC.
The LLC has developed a socratic system where they are available to guide students while simultaneously allowing them to learn the language at their own pace.
Taylor knows first hand that students who have received help from the LLC have became more confident in things like note taking, test taking, the ability to efficiently use textbooks and using grammar that is being studied.
Getting students to seek help when needed can be a struggle, but it is all about the student’s effort and level of motivation to do well in a foreign language class.
“Students are shy and need to understand that these services are available to the A ++ students and the F ++students. It is not about anything except helping everyone reach their own success,” said Taylor.
“We are very friendly [and] supportive. We want to help you become better students, as well as better in whatever second language you are working on we help everyone of all skill levels.”
