Halloween Review

Fall is upon us, which means new and returning shows are ready to grace our television screens. “Scream Queens” premiered on Sept. 22, hoping to make its mark amongst other elite TV shows.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the premiere was heavily anticipated through social media, commercials, Internet and magazine ads. Like others, I counted the days until its debut, simply because it seems like every face in Hollywood is going to make an appearance. From pop stars Nick Jonas and Ariana Grande to TV favorites Emma Roberts and Lea Michele, this show offers the formula of featuring famous pop culture celebrities. The most exciting part is the return of Jamie Lee Curtis, who hasn’t made much of a comeback since her iconic role in “Freaky Friday.”

At first glance, the concept seemed interesting. For college students, it can be appealing to see a show based on a sorority. I originally felt like it was going to be “The House Bunny” meets “Mean Girls.” While watching it, I wasn’t expecting it to be so terrifying! It soon turned into “The House Bunny” and “Mean Girls” meets “Scream” and “Friday the 13th!”

This show is addicting because it lacks logic. You almost feel as though you are watching a spoof on the horror genre, but it’s too appealing to pass up because of the need to know what happens next.

While every college doesn’t have a serial killer on their campus, it does tie in with normal things we experience, just in a dramatized way, such as the experience of starting college, making friends, fitting in and establishing an identity. Characters include mean girl Chanel (Roberts), girls who envy her (appropriately called Chanel #2, 3 and 5), good girl Grace (Skyler Samuels) and caring parent Mr. Gardener (Oliver Hudson).

The story adds a mixture of elements that can appeal to all viewers through gruesome, comedic and relatable scenes. You’ll experience “What is going on?” moments (one of the girls has a fetish for dead bodies, not exactly something you view everyday), but you’ll also experience the “OMG, what happens next?!” moments.

Still early in its first season, it will be interesting to see whether this show truly lives up to all its hype. We can only keep watching to find out.
