Universal Studios Hollywood brings scares to visitors

Halloween Horror Nights returned to Universal Studios Hollywood on Sept. 18 and is held every weekend through Nov. 1. It offers six mazes, four scare zones, a brand new show and a new terror tram to terrify guests.

This year’s maze lineup consists of Insidious: “Return to the Further,” “Walking Dead: Wolves Not Far,” “Crimson Peak,” “This is the End: 3D,” “Halloween: Michael Comes Home” and “AVP: Alien vs Predator.”

The “Insidious” maze takes visitors through scenes from all three “Insidious” movies, where the ghosts of The Further are lurking in the shadows at every turn. This maze and “Walking Dead” (which allows fans to walk through scenes from show’s latest season) are both highly popular this year and can wait times of over 100 minutes throughout the course of the night. The good news is that guests arriving at the park before 6:15 p.m. can enjoy early access to these mazes an hour before the general public enters for no extra charge.

Another one of the most popular mazes this year is Halloween, a reprise of its 2009 predecessor that takes people through scenes from the original “Halloween” film with a new ending that proves once and for all, “ you can’t kill the boogeyman.”

Returning from last year, visitors can experience firsthand the “Alien vs. Predator” movies utilizing animatronic aliens and scare actor predators around every turn. Both AVP and Crimson Peak (an all-new maze that takes guests through the ghost filled castle of the Crimson Peak film) are located on the backlot area of the park with a tram to shuttle guests to their destination. The trams can get backed up on crowded nights, so make sure to visit these mazes early in the night.

Finally, “This is the End: 3D” is a first of a kind experience that blends horror and comedy into one maze as guests try to survive the apocalyptic wasteland inspired by the film.

Situated around the Halloween maze are three of the scare zones for this year. “Exterminatorz” is where humans are pests for the bugs to hunt. “Dark Christmas” is a returning scare zone where the evil Krampus has taken over Christmas and “Corpz” is where the dead of World War I haunt the streets of France.

The last scare zone is the “Purge,” located on the lower lot near “Crimson Peak.” New for this year is the “Purge” terror tram, where participants of the purge are hunting guests through the Universal backlot.

Also new for this year is the performance by the famous dance group, Jabbawockeez, with a routine created especially for Halloween Horror Nights.

In addition to the Halloween fun, Universal’s regular rides are open all night for those wishing to experience the thrill of the rides in addition to the scares.

Overall, the mazes and scare zones this year provide many good scares and maintain the exquisite detail and horrific makeup of years past. While lines can get long throughout the night, making use of the early entry program for “Walking Dead” or “Insidious” is an excellent way to get a head start on the night and make sure that everything gets done.

In addition, wait times are posted on signs throughout the park to help plan the night. The event runs Thursdays through Sundays until 2 a.m. through Nov. 1, with early entry until 6:15 p.m. every event night. Tickets are available at www.HalloweenHorrorNights.com at a discount from the front gate prices for most nights.
