The Cal State San Marcos bats went cold during the baseball team’s weekend series, dropping two of three games to the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors.

After a draining seven-hour drive to Turlock CA, the Cougars quickly fell behind in game one against the Warriors. Entering the seventh inning, the Cougars trailed 5-2.

A single by Cougar outfielder Clinton Perez and a Warrior error brought the score to 5-4. Another error allowed infielder Tyler Place to cross home plate and tie the ball game.

In the ninth inning, the Cougars came alive, scoring seven runs, sending the Warriors to a defeat.

The Cougars won the first game of the series 12-6 on the strength of a .316 batting average.

The Cougars couldn’t repeat their hot streak and struggled to find success against Warrior pitchers.

In game two, centerfielder Jon Putnam and catcher Hudson Bilodeau each had two hits to the Warriors six, leading to a 5-2 defeat.

Game three, the Cougars struggled again with only five hits in contrast to the Warriors’ 10 hits and eight earned runs. The Cougars lost 8-2.

“As a team we were swinging the bat pretty well this weekend, having quality at bats and working the pitch count up on pitchers, but we just kept hitting it right at their fielders,” senior first baseman Brandon Bentson said. “It is very frustrating, but we’ve got to keep our heads up and keep hitting the ball hard.”

The Cougars’ overall record drops to 15-16 and 7-8 in conference.

With the weekend losses behind them, the Cougars now turn their attention to hosting Chico State on April 2 and April 3.

“After finding out what an overnight road trip is like last weekend in Stanislaus, I see home field advantage as a huge part of helping our team out,” Bentson said. “… Chico State has never played at our field and will have to figure out how [to play on our field].”
