During the summer break CSUSM alumni Kelly Wherry started her tenure as the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach.

Wherry graduated from Cal State in 2011 with a degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Psychology. She played for the CSUSM Women’s Soccer team as a Center Midfield from 2006 to 2009 and served as team captain for three seasons. “It’s what I grew up playing and pretty much all I know,” Wherry said.

Prior to graduation, Wherry coached club soccer in Lake Forest and for the L.A. Galaxy Clinics from 2007 to 2011.

Wherry, a two-time award winner of both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All American Award and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I) Conference MVP in 2008, led her team to two conference championships.

Wherry is excited to be back at CSUSM and ready to lead the women’s team to victory this upcoming season alongside Head Coach Bobby Renneisen, her former coach.

“I always wanted to come back…I absolutely love it, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now.”

Renneisen is excited to have Wherry as a part of his team again. Her competitiveness and dedication to the team assures Renneisen that having her as an assistant will be a good fit.

“It’s awesome, Kelly was definitely one of my favorite players to coach. She’s been here since the first team in 2006,” Renneisen said. “One of the best parts about Kelly is that she’s personable and she’s a hard worker…the girls can see how much she cares for them both off the field and on the field.”

Both Wherry and Renneisen have the same expectations and goals for their athletes, making them a perfect pair. “Our goals for this season are to finish in the top six in the conference which allows you to qualify for the [California Collegiate Athletic Association] Conference Tournament,” Renneisen said.
Come cheer on our Cougars as they face their biggest competitions of the season against UCSD at 12:30 on Wednesday, Sep. 21 and Sonoma State at 11:30 am on Sunday, Oct. 2 at CSUSM.
