“Awkward”
3 ½ /5 pawprints
Must watch: Season 1, episode 8: “The Adventures of Aunt Ally and Lil’ Bitch.” The popular MTV series “Awkward” has now made its way to Netflix instant streaming.
Being one of the few MTV scripted shows, the story follows Jenna as she goes from being deflowered by the most popular guy in school to being a social outcast after a freak accident turns her “suicidal.”
As if that isn’t enough, she also has to deal with the ultimate “bitch” cheerleader while having a hard time connecting with her immature parents who had gotten pregnant in high school. However, she has her two best friends and quirky guidance counselor by her side ready to defend whatever rumor is against her.
As college students, we all remember having our share of humiliating moments in high school and being stuck in that awkward stage. This show is a reminder of how easily things can get out of proportions when you are young. “Awkward” is fun to watch and it is reassuring to know that that uncomfortable phase is well behind us.
“Happy Gilmore”
3/5 pawprints
As one of his breakout roles into the film industry, Adam Sandler both wrote and played the lead in the 1997 hit “Happy Gilmore.” Sandler is well known today for playing roles with rage and goofiness and his portrayal as Happy Gilmore is no different.
With a passion for hockey and a great slap shot, Gilmore tries out for a hockey team but is rejected because he isn’t the most talented skater and has rage issues. After learning that his Grandmother, who had raised him, did not pay her taxes and now owes $270,000 to the IRS in three months or will have her house foreclosed upon, Gilmore struggles to find a way to make some extra cash. After successfully winning a bet to hit a golf ball the entire length of the neighborhood, Gilmore takes up golf and earns a spot on the Pro Golf Tour that could give him just enough money to settle his grandmothers’ debt.
His opponent during the tour, Shooter McGavin, is resentful of Gilmore’s talents and sees him as a threat that must be stopped at all costs. With his rage and outlandish gestures, Gilmore quickly becomes a crowd favorite and even charms the tour’s PR head Virginia.
Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Bob Barker and even Ben Stiller with an uncredited role all co-star in this hit comedy.
