Movie Review: Sizzling films from winter break

Justin S. Sanchez, Staff Writer

Despite the cold temperatures during winter, the box office continues to warm up with the release of great films. These are movies that have been out since winter break and are a must-
watch.

“The Hateful Eight” (R)

“The Hateful Eight” is a mystery/western that proves worthy of standards to the laudable style of director Quentin Tarantino. He released another great film with grandeur that derives from his storytelling and cinematography. The story is about eight individuals who take shelter in a Wyoming cabin during a blizzard, despite their hateful differences. This movie, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, is worthwhile for its ominous feeling caused by the characters’ relationships.

“The Big Short” (R)

Movies that correctly represent real life crises can be entertaining. The drama/comedy, “The Big Short,” based on the global financial crisis of 2008, shows how comedy director Adam McKay can make a serious matter entertaining and funny. This drama-farce is elevated by the talented cast that is composed of Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell and Brad Pitt. This film brings out the struggles our society faced less than a decade ago.

“The Revenant” (R)

“The Revenant” is a film that has received commotion and buzz for its potential to win long-time nominee, Leonardo Dicaprio, his first Oscar. The story takes place during the early 19th century American frontier and is about a man seeking revenge after he is left stranded by his hunting crew. DiCaprio goes to depths by portraying a man trying to survive in the wild, regardless of his physical and emotional pain. This adventure/thriller also displays beautiful camerawork that helps the viewer emerge into the harsh and cold wilderness.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (PG13)

The most anticipated film of 2015 and must-watch for 2016 is “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” This space opera is the seventh installment in the “Star Wars” saga that brings a new spin and fresh plot influenced from the originals. The film’s originality can appeal to both fans and newbies. The story is about a galaxy far, far away being under turmoil by the First Order while the Resistance fights them off with the help of newly found allies, in the process of finding themselves. The film stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac.
