Coach’s Corner: Laurie Nevarez
February 10, 2016
Team Leaders: “Our team leaders are our seniors. They’ve been in the program for three years and they have a great grasp on our competition, on how we run the program and [how]to succeed at this level.
Expectations: “We have a good mix of new players and returners. Our expectations this season is to compete in the CCAA [California Collegiate Athletic Association], to improve week by week and for each individual to really have their own success. Whether it’s increasing their batting average, or working really well with a teammate. We’d like each of them to have success … My expectations for when they’re off the field is that they’re strong in the classroom.”
Toughest Matchups: “There are some strong opponents in the CCAA. And we’ve also scheduled some PacWest teams, like Cal Baptist and Concordia, who are always very strong … I think our entire season we’re going to be battling against some strong teams—some of the best in the nation.”
“[In the CCAA] we have returning powerhouses like Monterey Bay, Humboldt, Sonoma State, [and UCSD] … It’s kind of fun having a San Diego rival. We’re looking forward to competing against them this year too.”
Final Thoughts: “I’m really proud where these players have progressed since fall. They’re working really well together as a team since they’ve stepped on. I’m excited to see them play. I think the excitement of getting into a new league and playing NCAA Division II and being apart of that elite group is pretty special. I’m excited and can’t wait to see how we do.”
