5 films that made January, February worthwhile

Now that the 2016 Academy Awards ceremony has passed, it seems as if movie studios are wearing down.

In the film world, January and February are universally known as “dump months,” in which the studios try to get their bad films out of the way.

However, there are always some good movies to spice things up and this might be the best dump season in a long time. Here are five films that I believe made these months a little better:

“Deadpool”

This is the best film of the year so far and one of the best movie-going experiences of my life. It’s hilarious, exciting, has great action and has a great lead role performed by Ryan Reynolds. While nothing I say about the film can really do it justice, I would advise everyone to see it if you haven’t already. If you haven’t seen it, you are definitely missing out.

“Eddie the Eagle”

Although I was only mildly looking forward to the film, I ended up liking it more than I expected. Telling the story of Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper, the film was inspiring to watch. It’s a really nice movie about the power of following your dreams in the face of overwhelming odds and is sure to tug at your heartstrings. Hugh Jackman (“Wolverine”) and Taron Egerton (“Kingsman”) also have great onscreen chemistry.

“Kung Fu Panda 3”

The third movie in a franchise could either be a harbinger of great things to come or a sign from the film gods to torch it and run. I’m not sure about the former, but “Kung Fu Panda 3” is definitely not the latter. It’s not as good as the previous two films, but it’s still a lot of fun and sure to entertain, regardless of your age. Jack Black once again shows that he was born to play the lead character, Po.

“The Finest Hours”

I felt like this film is sort of like the Coast Guard version of “Eddie the Eagle.” Although it’s probably going to fly under most people’s radars, it does tell a great story of courage and sacrifice that would be unbelievable if it didn’t actually happen.

“Triple 9”

I wasn’t blown away by this movie like I thought I would be, but if you’re in for a good crime-thriller filled with dirty cops, Russian mobsters and betrayals, this just might be what you’re looking for. This film also features stellar performances across the board, particularly from Anthony Mackie (“Captain America” franchise).
