On March 5, men’s and women’s track returned home from a successful weekend at the CSULA Invitational.

Grad student Trent Warren’s first place finish in the 3000m with a time of 8:19.97 broke the school record set in 2010 by Brett Campfield.

“[He] smashed our school record by 7 seconds … He is doing extremely well and my goal for him is to get him to a sub four minute mile,” Head Coach Steve Scott said.

This is Warren’s second record-breaking performance in two weeks. On Feb. 27 at the Rossi Relays, he anchored the distance medley relay (DMR) that also included Justin Washington, Aaron Hickman, and Alex Gronotte that broke the school record for that event.

The other first place finish for the Cougars came when Frederik Jahr’s  jump of 1.95m tied two others for first place. Jahr then won a jump off to clinch his victory.

On the women’s side, Jasmine Williams, Charlotte Kuzminsky, Lauren Wyckoff and Natalie Rodriguez finished second in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:06.73.

Kuzminsky had the best individual women’s performance in the 800m with a third place finish and a time of 2:19.75.

The next opportunity for more California Collegiate Athletic Association qualifications for distance runners is March 11 at Occidental for the Oxy Distance Carnival. The rest of the track team will be at the UCSD City Invitational in La Jolla on March 12.

“Every meet we go to is trying to get people qualifies. We have 17 qualified right now for men and women. I anticipate we will get probably another 10-12 on Friday and probably a couple more on Saturday,” Scott said.
