Women’s club lacrosse opens up with a narrow loss in the first game of the season against UCSD on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. leaving the final score 9-11.

The Cougars started off strong; with high spirits they put the pressure on the Tritons. The entire first half began with the Cougars scoring then Tritons quickly answering back, and ended in a tie 5-5.

“The team had solid energy throughout the game, we had a lot of players to sub in and out to keep everyone energized and focused,” said midfielder Kaylee Crivello.

Once second half started the Cougars quickly scored three more points but the Tritons quickly retaliated scoring an additional five points. The Tritons momentum picked up and never gave up their lead the rest of the game.

The Cougars scored one more goal, as did the Tritons after that, leaving the scoreboard 9-11 in favor of the Tritons.

Team president Marissa Rillo found something good out of the loss and continues to push the team in the right direction.

“I think this game definitely motivated us for the rest of the season. We found our strengths and are ready to work harder and keep moving forward.

Coach Chelsea Hargett is confident in the girl’s upcoming season and watching them grow and learn.

“They learned how much work a single game takes… I saw things that we need to work on and I saw some great things from them the whole game. They are very smart lacrosse players and I can’t wait to see what this season brings us.”
