Cougars fall short at D2 West Region Showcase

The Cal State San Marcos women’s volleyball team fell 1-3 at the D2 West Region Showcase in Monmouth, Oregon after getting shutout 0-3 in its opening match against Western Oregon on Thursday night.

The Cougars suffered additional losses from Chaminade and Seattle Pacific, the Cougars only win came against Fresno Pacific who they beat last week while hosting the second Annual Cougar Classic at home. The team had an opportunity to split the series but could not finish off Seattle Pacific late in the fourth period.

Outside hitter / middle blocker Maddy Newcombe led the Cougars with 33 kills, nine blocks, one dig in the series along with outside hitter Madi Anderson with 29 kills, 27 digs, three aces, two blocks, recording her first double-double of the season against Fresno Pacific with 14 kills and 10 digs. Libero / outside hitter Grecia Codero-Barr helped in the Cougars only win with a recorded 22 digs against Fresno Pacific. Outside hitter Micah Hébert contributed in the series with 23 kills and eight blocks and three digs.

The Cougars now (3-5) overall and in last place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division and are heading into conference play starting next week against crosstown rivals UCSD.

The Cougars are making history competing in this year’s first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) D2 postseason eligible season. Earlier this pre-season the Cougars volleyball team were predicted to qualify in this year’s 2017 CCAA Volleyball Tournament and picked eighth overall and fourth in the South Division by the 2017 Preseason Coaches’ Poll made up by the conference’s 13 head coaches.
