The CSUSM’s baseball team take a win, 6-5, and a loss, 15-1, versus Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in a doubleheader Sunday, February 26.  The Cougars are now 1-3 in the College Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Sunday first opened a game at 11 a.m., a few hits from both sides in the first three innings, but no one could get on the scoreboard. It wasn’t until the fourth inning the Broncos score off an RBI making the score 1-0. Cougar Justin Mellano sends one over the fence tying up the game, 1-1, being followed with Cougar Anthony Rodriguez’s single and ultimately advancing to score in the fifth inning causing the Cougars to take the lead, 2-1.

After a few RBI’s from Cougar Aidan Stinnett and Mellano, Cougars are up 4-1.  With the Cougars striking out the side and leaving two men on base, it is now the bottom of the seventh and Cougars pile up 4 hits and 2 runs, making it 6-1.  Although the Broncos are behind, the fight wasn’t over. After four men being walked, a few singles, and a score on a wild pitch, the Broncos come back, 6-5. Cougars were able to hold their lead and take the win, final 6-5.

The doubleheader continued with the Cougars falling short.  Broncos put themselves on the scoreboard first, but in the bottom of the first, Cougar Tyler Place answered with a homerun off the first pitch to tie up the game, 1-1.

Unfortunately, it was not as hopeful as it seemed, Cougars couldn’t keep the momentum going. Cougars experienced three pitching changes and gave up eight walks overall.  Broncos overtook the Cougars in hits, 20-5, leaving Cougars with the loss, final 15-1.

The Cougars are scheduled to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills at CSUSM on Friday, March 2 at 2 p.m.
