The 40th MTV Video Music Awards took over UBS Arena in New York on Wednesday night, featuring the latest songs and nostalgic moments from the show’s past.
The night kicked off with Eminem doing a medley of his greatest hits, accompanied by a squad of Slim Shady lookalikes reminiscent of his iconic 2000 performance. Eminem extended his record to 15 awards by earning two VMAs that night.
Megan Thee Stallion was both host and performer, showcasing tracks from her latest album “Megan”, including “Mamushi” and “Hiss” with a special appearance by Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba. But her outfit, a homage to Britney Spears’ iconic 2001 look, was the standout moment for me.
Taylor Swift, of course, stood out by taking seven awards, including Video of the Year for her collaboration with Post Malone on “Fortnight”. This win marked Swift’s third consecutive year winning this award adding to her growing collection of VMAs. Swift also won Artist of the Year for the second year in a row, to no one’s surprise. In her acceptance speech, she honored 9/11 victims and gave a shoutout to her boyfriend Travis Kelce.
Katy Perry was honored with the Video Vanguard Award, celebrating her lifetime achievements in music. She also delivered a mashup of her greatest hits, including “E.T” and “Firework”.
Sabrina Carpenter performed her summer hit “Espresso” and accepted the award for Song of the Year, while Chappell Roan made her VMA debut winning Best New Artist. She dedicated her award to the LGBTQ+ community and performed “Good Luck Babe”.
Other notable winners included SZA for Best R&B with “Snooze,” and Billie Eilish for Video for Good with “What Was I Made For” from the Barbie soundtrack. The Best Group award went to Seventeen, although they did not attend the ceremony. Le Sserafim won Best Push Performance of the Year, and Lisa made her solo debut while taking home the Best K-Pop award for the second time.
