CALIFORNIA FACULTY ASSOCIATION VOTES ON ROLLING STRIKE THIS WEEK

California’s Faculty Association (CFA) will be voting April 16 – 27 on whether to hold a rolling strike in fall 2012 if their contracts are not negotiated fairly.

The April vote is to authorize the Board of Directors to allow a strike next fall; the exact date will not be decided in this vote. Students will be given advanced notice if a strike will occur.

CFA is looking for “a fair and equitable contract that creates an environment where faculty can do what they do best — stimulate learning and advance knowledge,” said Don Barrett, CSUSM CFA chapter president.

In November 2011, CFA held a strike at two campuses to make a statement to Chancellor Reed that they wanted compromises and fair negotiations in their contracts. The strike in action of 2011 caught the attention of the chancellor and media.

“We actually have the capacity to pull off a strike… even in difficult economic times,” the CFA website said.

The CFA represents all faculty on campus, although only 60 percent of faculty are active members in the union, according to Barrett.
