THE COUGAR SHUFFLE

Valentine’s Day seems to be the holiday that gets the most love as well as the most hate. Also known as “Single’s Awareness Day,” this holiday has inspired this compilation of songs of a more depressing nature that captures the agony of love, whether past or present. Are you immune to the power of Adele after leaving “Someone Like You” on repeat? Then see below.

1.“Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” by Stars tells the uncomfortable story of running into a once-significant other and accepting the outcome of your relationship. The song is all too familiar and at the same time therapeutic as it brings a sense of closure in getting over the past.

2.“Lately” by The Helio Sequence captures the feeling of being over someone and how you don’t think about them or stress at the very mention of their name anymore. The lyrics are convincing and liberating in overcoming the healing process.

3.“Hey Ya” by Obadiah Parker is an elegant cover of the Outkast song. This slowed-down, melodic version of the hit song takes notice of the insightful lyrics in a way that the Outkast version passes with its overshadowing, catchy beat. The song reveals the situation in knowing your significant other loves you, but still wondering if they want to be somewhere else.

4.“Sometime around Midnight” by The Airborne Toxic Event chronicles seeing an ex in a late-night bar setting and the agony that ensues. Their scent that you almost forgot triggers a chain reaction of emotions and memories that tear you apart and remind you of everything you don’t have with that person anymore.

5.“Accidental Babies” by Damien Rice is easily the most depressing song, not just because of the lyrics, but also because of the sad, slow piano melody. It’s haunting and sad and almost pathetic as Rice’s voice perfectly captures the torturous feeling of being one part of a love triangle. Jealousy leads to asking questions that you don’t want to know the answers to, but you have to know.
