Athlete Spotlight: Landon Sherwood, men’s soccer goalkeeper

By Karla Reyes

Staff Writer

Sophomore Landon Sherwood, who plays goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team, has been playing soccer since he was five and can safely say that soccer is his life.

Q: Have you played any other sports besides soccer?

A: Although soccer is hands-down my primary sport, I also played football and volleyball in high school. I was the place kicker and punter for my high school and opposite on the volleyball team. Being a tri-athlete letter winner was a great accomplishment in my life.

Q: What do you love most about soccer?

A: I love the game so much! When I am not on the field playing it, I am in the gym training for it. My favorite part about playing soccer for CSUSM is definitely the brotherhood that was created. Last year, I was a red shirt with a lot to learn about the college game. I took that opportunity as a challenge to get mentally and physically stronger for the upcoming season. Here we are in the fall of 2012 and I have been fortunate enough to earn the starting goalkeeper position.

Q: What has been your favorite game so far this season?

A: My favorite game so far this season was our 1-0 shut-out home opener victory against Masters College who [the men’s team] have never beat in school history. The crowd was great and we look forward to the same amazing home field advantage for the remainder of the season and into the A.I.I where we will protect our conference championship at home as we host the tournament.

Q: What does the team have to work on for the rest of the season?

A: Thus far this season, I believe we have not reached our maximal potential, although there have been great moments in the run of the plays. Personally, my goal is to keep the team in the game the best that I can by making saves and keeping the ball out of the net. Collectively, we are taking steps in the right direction to defend our title. We train way too hard and are surrounded by way too much talent to accept anything less than back-to-back A.I.I conference championships.

Q: Whom would you like to thank from your soccer career?

A: Ron Pulvers and Bobby Renneisen have done a phenomenal job establishing and maintaining a successful men and women’s soccer program. I am grateful to be here and I am proud to be a Cougar.
