Campus Recreation kicked off its most popular intramural sport,  flag football, on Sept. 21.

Among the 10 teams competing this year, only two are newcomers, The True Freshmen and The Big Red Machine. Some of the members of The True Freshmen gave their perspective on intramurals and flag football after their first game, against a returning team “The Renegades.”

Question: Why did you decided to play?
Answer: We wanted to play, compete and represent the freshmen class.

Q: What happened out there? It was a close game [26-23]. You almost won.
A: We were a sleeper team. We’ll come back during playoffs. [Flag football] is just for practice. Look for us in basketball.

Q: Do you have a strategy?
A: We stay and watch. We are learning by observation, creating a strategy.

Q: How do you feel about being a new team and competing with an older crowd?
A: We like a challenge. We aren’t intimidated. Age is nothing but a number. We just want to compete; we’re just (former) high school athletes who want to compete.

You can cheer on The True Freshmen and the rest of the other teams at various times on Fridays and Saturdays until Oct. 27, at the lower field on the Corner of Twin Oaks and Craven. The championship game will be played Saturday Nov. 2, at a time to be determined.
