OPINION: DREAM ACT WOES

February 13, 2012
I am one of the thousands of students across California who was, and will most likely continue to be, affected by the loss of financial aid. In the 2010-2011 academic year financial aid, grants and a small subsidized loan covered my educational costs quite comfortably.

TALES FROM THE NERD SIDE: “STAR WARS: THE OLD REPUBLIC” -THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE

January 31, 2012
On Dec. 20, the gaming world saw the release of “Star Wars: The Old Republic” and since then it has quickly become one of the biggest massive multiplayer online (MMO) games of all time.

BACK TO SCHOOL BLUES… STILL?

January 31, 2012
There’s no shame in driving to school on the first day of spring semester with Christmas music playing in the stereo. It is still winter, and not everyone has packed away her holiday lights. I haven’t quite packed the vacation away—at least not mentally.

“THE MUG”

December 6, 2011
Dec. 12, 2011 will be quite a day for me. No, I won’t be finished with finals. No, I won’t be going on a tropical vacation. Actually, I’m going to the Ellen DeGeneres Show for her Twelve Days of Giveaways. So far, it’s looking way better than a trip to Hawaii.

MAKING THANKSGIVING

November 22, 2011
In “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving,” Sally Brown said, “Why should I give thanks on Thanksgiving? What have I got to be thankful for?” Unlike Sally, it’s not hard for me to think about what I’m thankful for.

“THE MUG”

November 7, 2011
Occupy Wall Street brings to mind three things: protest, politics, and pepper spray. I could have included police brutality in that list, but I couldn’t think of a synonym for “brutality” that started with a P.

SCARED: A FEW LEVELS OF FEAR

October 24, 2011
Maybe it’s the feeling you get when you’re home alone and you can’t place that odd sound you heard. Perhaps it’s those moments where you feel someone is watching you even though you are certain there is no one around. Fear takes many forms and because of its versatility, there are different ways to experience it.

“THE MUG”: CULTURED COSTUMING

October 24, 2011
“Mean Girls” is one of my favorite movies. The entire thing is full of extraordinarily hilarious one-liners, but one sentence within one scene rang truest to me: “Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”

WHERE’S THE VALUE IN HIGHER EDUCATION?

October 11, 2011
In 1960, the California State Department of Education drafted a 230-page, 15-year master plan for the University of California, California State College (later CSU) and community college systems with the goal of saving the state’s higher education system from “destruction by unbridled competition.”

BEYOND THE TEXTBOOK: MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR COLLEGE YEARS

October 11, 2011
Students: let’s put on our existential hats for a moment and ask ourselves the big question: why are we here (and by “here,” I mean college)? Why are you— one specimen in the several billion carbon-based bits of humanity— on this path of higher education?

A LITTLE MORE PARKING FOR A “LITTLE” MORE MONEY

October 11, 2011
If you are a student at CSUSM, you’re probably a commuter. Therefore, you understand what it’s like paying for parking passes.
